NASA Creates a Space Telescope to Protect Earth from Asteroids.
NASA is preparing for the Artemis I mission to send humans back to the Moon. But for the experiment, they will send the dolls first. Well, for the name of the doll itself, NASA invites you to choose it.
The Artemis I mission, also known as Moonkin, will include an anatomical model to launch, replacing humans aboard the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and the Orion spacecraft. These puppets will be tested for eventual use by humans in the Artemis II mission.
As quoted from the Jerusalem Post, Moonkin is not the only one taking part in this mission. Onboard the starship that carries it, there will also be two other anatomical models known as "phantom torsos." Named Helga and Zohar, the two will sit at the bottom of the plane and will take part in the Matroshka AstroRad Radiation Experiment (MARE). The experiment was intended to measure the space radiation that astronauts can experience on missions to the Moon, as well as test the usefulness of the AstroRad vest.
For the vest itself, it was made by the Tel Aviv, Israel-based company StemRad in collaboration with Lockheed Martin. The Astrid vest is designed to be a personal protective device to protect astronauts from exposure to extraterrestrial radiation beyond Earth's magnetosphere.
While Helga and Zohar already have names chosen by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and ISA, Moonkin does not yet have them. NASA also asked the public for help and astronomy lovers to choose a suitable name for Moonkin via social media. Starting June 16, NASA via Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram asks you to choose one of two pre-thought-out names. These two proffered names of course have meaning.
The first is ACE, an acronym for Artemis Crew Explorer i.e. Campos, dedicated to Arturo Campos, who helped bring home Apollo 13. The second name is Wargo, a tribute to NASA's first chief exploration scientist Michael Wargo.
